Safety Week
Safety week begins on the Monday 5th December and all City Pools Swimming classes will be participating in order to prepare and educate kids for the summer ahead. The aim of safety week is to teach parents and children the following important lessons:
- Learn to swim and survive
- Swim between the flags
- Always supervise children swimming
- Never swim alone
- Ensure your pool at home is fenced in
- Be aware of the ever changing environment
- When on a boat make sure you have life jackets for all on board
- Take care when rock fishing
Children in school aged levels Advanced and Transitional levels will need to bring clothing to their lessons to wear in the pool as they will be completing in a "Survival Challenge". Make sure that you bring a plastic bag along to your lesson to take the wet clothes home with you.

2011 Royal Life Saving Statistic
The Royal Life Saving Association recently released the 2011 Drowning report. The report showed that a total of 315 people died in Australian waterways between July 2010 to June 2011.
The sad reality is that a significant number of these drownings in 2011 were preventable and a result of risk taking. Water education and risk assessment is a major aspect to Learn to swim programs like City Pools Swimming as they are preventative methods to avoid such senseless deaths. Swimming lessons are so much more than learning how to swim; they also have a strong focus on water safety. A child can know how to swim and be confident in the water but they are not familiar with survival techniques that could save their lives. The Royal Life Saving Association urges Australians to gain professional assistance from swim school programs to ensure that we can learn to swim and survive.
The graph below shows the increase in drowning in Australia since 2002/2003.
